Honed Slate or Polished Slate has been smoothed down so that the surface is flat. The natural appearance of the slate is retained but the texture has been removed.

Riven slate is left in it's natural state and usually the back has been mechanicaly flattened to give a level surface. The full character of the floor is retained.
